Origin of City NameOriginally Lake Geneva was called "Muck Suck" for a Potawatomi Chief but was later changed to Geneva after Geneva, New York. He was a famous bank robber and gangster. He had a wife and two kids, which was unusual for a bank robber. When he was 12, he went to prison for shooting a fellow classmate in the jaw with a pistol he had found. He died at the age of 25 by stealing a car and was killed by the police. |
Historical EventsLake Geneva railroad access from Chicago made it popular in the roaring summer of the 1920's. The city was known as the Newport of the West. The city has been named one of the "Best Small Towns in America" in several listings in the past 50 years. In 1954, Lake Geneva was one of the three finalists in the United States Air Force Academy but ultimately it lost to Colorado Springs, Colorado. Lake Geneva has had many historical events and these are only some of them!
Historical SitesGeneva Lake Museum is a very fun place to discover the past. You may peek into a home, school house, and much more. You can actually go in to each of them and look closely at the furniture, tools, clothing and other artifacts!
click site title for more information Davidson Hall was nationally known as Northwestern Military and Naval Academy (NMNA). The school was founded in 1888. The eldest grandson of Franklin D. Roosevelt attended this school in 1948. In 1995, the school merged with St. John's Military Academy to be renamed the St. John's Northwestern Military Academy and moved to Delafield, WI. Davidson Hall no longer exists and the land is now a residential area. There is a plaque on a stone in remembrance of the school.
click site title for more information The Geneva Inn was built in 1911 and opened for operation in 1912. This hotel was built by Arthur L. Richards and Frank Lloyd Wright. This was their first project together. The hotel had many designs that Frank Lloyd Wright was known for such as stained glass. In 1915 the hotel's name was changed to Hotel Geneva. The hotel was demolished in 1970.
